Listen to this article

“Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.”

Context and Background:The Song of Solomon, also known as the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament. It is attributed to King Solomon and is a unique collection of love poems between a bride and her bridegroom. This particular verse is found towards the end of the book and describes the bride’s appearance as she comes up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved.

Symbolism and Meaning:a. Wilderness: The wilderness symbolizes a difficult and challenging season in the bride’s life. It represents a place of testing and trial. It could also be seen as a place of separation or a period of waiting.

b. Leaning upon her beloved: The bride is seen leaning upon her beloved, signifying her dependence and trust in her bridegroom. It speaks of her reliance on him for strength, support, and guidance. It represents a close and intimate relationship.

c. Apple tree: The apple tree is mentioned in this verse as the place where the bride was raised and born. It may symbolize a place of nourishment, provision, and protection. It could also allude to the Garden of Eden, drawing parallels between the bride’s relationship with her beloved and the original intimacy between Adam and Eve.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Dependence on God:The bride’s posture of leaning on her beloved reminds us of our need to lean on God in our journey through life. We are encouraged to trust in Him completely, especially during challenging times. God is our source of strength, comfort, and guidance.
  • Intimacy with God:The bride’s relationship with her beloved illustrates the kind of intimacy we can have with God. Just as she is close to her beloved, we can draw near to God through prayer, worship, and studying His Word. This closeness allows us to experience His love and receive His help in every aspect of our lives.
  • God’s faithfulness in the wilderness:The mention of the wilderness signifies that even in the difficult seasons of life, God is with us. He raises us up, nurtures us, and brings us forth. He is present in our wilderness experiences, providing for our needs and leading us through to a place of blessing.
  • Spiritual birth and rebirth:The reference to the bride’s birth under the apple tree could symbolize spiritual birth or rebirth. It reminds us that through our relationship with God, we experience new life, transformation, and the fulfillment of our true purpose.
