Isaiah 3:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:08

“And the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.”

Isaiah 3:17 is part of a larger passage in the book of Isaiah that describes the judgment and consequences that will befall the people of Judah, particularly the women of Jerusalem. This passage is a part of a broader section in which Isaiah pronounces God’s judgment upon Judah for their rebellion and idolatry.

In Isaiah 3:16-24, the prophet describes the excessive pride and vanity of the women of Jerusalem, portraying their lavish lifestyle and extravagant attire. However, instead of finding pleasure in their appearance and earthly possessions, God declares that He will take away their beauty and expose their shame.

In verse 17, it is stated that the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion. This metaphorical language symbolises the removal of their outward beauty and the loss of their societal status. In ancient times, a scab on the head was associated with affliction, disgrace, and mourning. The phrase implies that God will bring humiliation and judgment upon the women of Jerusalem.

Additionally, the verse continues by stating that the Lord will "discover their secret parts." This phrase can be understood metaphorically as a reference to the exposure of their private, shameful deeds or hidden sins. It signifies that God will lay bare the sins and transgressions of the women of Jerusalem, exposing their true nature and bringing them to account for their actions.

Overall, Isaiah 3:17 serves as a warning to the people of Judah, particularly the women, about the consequences of their pride, vanity, and sinful behaviour. It emphasises that external beauty and worldly possessions do not guarantee protection from God’s judgment. Instead, God looks at the heart and expects His people to live in accordance with His principles of righteousness and justice.
