Isaiah 3:22

Posted on 18 May at 15:08

“The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. In this particular chapter, Isaiah is pronouncing judgment upon the people of Judah for their sins and rebellion against God. The verses preceding Isaiah 3:22 describe the consequences that will befall the people due to their disobedience.

Attire and its significance:In Isaiah 3:22, the prophet highlights various articles of clothing and accessories. It is important to understand that during this time, fashion and outward appearance were often associated with social status and pride. The people of Judah had become obsessed with their external appearance, emphasizing the use of elaborate clothing and accessories to display their wealth and status.

The meaning behind the mentioned items:– Changeable suits of apparel: This refers to different sets of clothing, indicating the excessive and luxurious wardrobes that the people possessed.

– Mantles: These were long, loose outer garments worn over other clothing, often denoting wealth or authority.

– Wimples: A wimple was a cloth worn around the neck or head, often by women, for adornment.

– Crisping pins: These were pins or brooches used to fasten or decorate clothing.

Spiritual significance:While the mention of these clothing items may seem superficial, Isaiah uses them symbolically to convey a deeper spiritual message. The people of Judah were engrossed in their outward appearance, focusing on material wealth and worldly status rather than cultivating inner qualities and a relationship with God. Their obsession with physical adornment reflected their spiritual state of pride, arrogance, and spiritual emptiness.

  • Prioritizing inner qualities:Isaiah’s message reminds us of the importance of cultivating inner qualities such as humility, righteousness, and a heart that seeks after God. Our focus should be on developing a relationship with God and living a life that honors Him, rather than being preoccupied with external appearances and material possessions.
  • Guarding against pride:The excessive emphasis on outward appearance can lead to pride and self-centeredness. It is essential to guard against such attitudes and instead cultivate a spirit of humility and service towards others.
  • True beauty:Isaiah’s message challenges our definition of beauty. True beauty lies not in external appearance but in the character and virtues we possess. Cultivating a godly character and displaying the fruits of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) is far more valuable and enduring than any outward adornment.
