Isaiah 5:10

Posted on 18 May at 14:09

Yea ten acres of vineyard shall yeeld one Bath, and the seed of an Homer shall yeeld an Ephah. Isaiah 5:10 (KJV)

Context: Isaiah 5 is a chapter where the prophet Isaiah delivers a message from God to the people of Judah, warning them about their wickedness and the consequences they will face if they continue in their rebellion against God. In this specific verse, Isaiah uses agricultural metaphors to illustrate the economic devastation that will come upon the people due to their disobedience.

Symbolic Language:

  • “Ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath”: In ancient Israel, vineyards were a valuable source of produce. A “bath” was a liquid measurement used to quantify agricultural produce. This verse suggests that even with ten acres of vineyard, the yield would be so small that it would only produce one bath of grapes. This symbolizes scarcity and a lack of abundance.
  • “The seed of an homer shall yield an ephah”: Similarly, an “homer” was a dry measure used for grain, and an “ephah” was also a measure of grain. Here, the imagery portrays a situation where the seed sown is insufficient, resulting in a small harvest. This represents unfruitfulness and a decrease in productivity.

Spiritual Meaning:

  • The passage goes beyond mere agricultural productivity; it carries a spiritual message. God is using these illustrations to reveal the consequences of the people’s disobedience. The scarcity and lack of abundance described in the verse symbolize the judgment and punishment that will come upon the people as a result of their sinful ways.
  • This verse emphasizes the principle of reaping what one sows. The people of Judah had turned away from God, pursuing their own selfish desires and engaging in wickedness. As a consequence, they would experience a decline in their material blessings and economic prosperity. It serves as a reminder that God is just and will hold people accountable for their actions.

Application:

The principle of sowing and reaping: Meditate on the principle of sowing and reaping as described in this verse. Understand that our choices and actions have consequences. Seek to sow righteousness, love, and obedience to God’s Word, knowing that a life aligned with God’s will leads to blessings and abundance.

Repentance and restoration: If you recognize areas of disobedience in your life, take the opportunity to repent and turn back to God. Seek His forgiveness and ask for His guidance to live a life that honors Him. Remember that God is merciful and desires restoration and reconciliation with His people.

Remember to read the surrounding verses and consult other commentaries or resources to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
