Isaiah 6:11

“Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly desolate,”

Isaiah 6:11 (KJV) says:

This verse is part of the prophet Isaiah’s vision and encounter with God. In the previous verses (Isaiah 6:1-10), Isaiah sees a vision of the Lord sitting on a throne, high and exalted, with seraphim surrounding Him. He becomes aware of his own unworthiness and the sinfulness of the people around him.

In Isaiah 6:11, after witnessing this grand vision of God’s glory, Isaiah asks the Lord how long the judgment and destruction will continue. His question reflects a concern for the condition of the people and the land. In response to Isaiah’s question, the Lord provides a sobering answer, describing the extent of the desolation that will occur before restoration can take place.

The verse describes the Lord’s reply to Isaiah, stating that the cities will be wasted without inhabitants, the houses without people, and the land utterly desolate. This is a portrayal of severe judgment and devastation that will come upon the land as a consequence of the people’s persistent rebellion and unfaithfulness.

Isaiah’s question and the Lord’s response convey the gravity of the judgment that is to come, emphasizing the severity of the consequences for the people’s disobedience. It serves as a warning to the people of Israel about the consequences of their actions and the need for repentance.

In a broader context, this verse can also be seen as a foreshadowing of the Babylonian exile that the Israelites would later experience due to their continued disobedience to God. The destruction and desolation described in Isaiah 6:11 find their fulfillment during that time of exile.

Overall, Isaiah 6:11 serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness and obedience to God. It highlights the consequences of unrepentant sin and rebellion, but it also points towards the hope of restoration and redemption that can come through genuine repentance and turning back to God.
