Isaiah 7:3
“Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field;”
Context:Isaiah 7 is set during the reign of Ahaz, the king of Judah. At this time, the kingdom of Judah was under threat from the alliance of Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel. Ahaz and his people were filled with fear and uncertainty.
Divine Command:In this verse, the Lord instructs the prophet Isaiah to meet King Ahaz. It is interesting to note that Isaiah is accompanied by his son, Shearjashub. This name means “a remnant shall return” and serves as a sign to Ahaz of God’s faithfulness and promise.
Symbolic Location:The Lord directs Isaiah to meet Ahaz at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field. This location likely holds symbolic significance. The upper pool and the fuller’s field were public spaces, suggesting that God’s message was meant for all the people, not just the king. It also indicates that God was aware of the pressing situation faced by the people of Judah.
Ahaz’s Dilemma:Ahaz was torn between seeking help from foreign powers and trusting in the Lord. The Lord wanted to provide Ahaz with an opportunity to seek His counsel and reassurance directly through the prophet Isaiah.
God’s Presence and Guidance:By sending Isaiah to meet Ahaz, the Lord demonstrates His concern for His people and His willingness to guide them through difficult times. It signifies God’s desire to communicate His message and offer divine wisdom and encouragement to Ahaz in his time of fear and indecision.
The subsequent verses in Isaiah 7 continue to unfold the dialogue between Ahaz and Isaiah, with God’s promise of deliverance and a sign of the coming Messiah, Immanuel.
