Isaiah 7:8

For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin, and within threescore and fiue yeeres shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people. Isaiah 7:8 (KJV)

“For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.” To grasp Isaiah 7:8 fully, it is essential to consider the historical setting of the prophecy. The oracle was delivered by the prophet Isaiah during the reign of Ahaz, king of Judah, at a time when the northern kingdom of Israel (often identified with Ephraim) and the kingdom of Aram‑Syria had formed an alliance against Judah. This political coalition created genuine fear among Ahaz and his people.

The phrase “head of Syria” points to Damascus, which functioned as the capital and administrative centre of Syria. In the ancient Near Eastern usage, “head” denotes the seat of authority. Rezin, identified as the ruler of Damascus, therefore represented the leadership of Syria, underscoring the threat that the Syrian power posed to Judah.

The latter portion of the verse looks to the fate of Ephraim. The text indicates that the “head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son,” describing the political hierarchy of the northern kingdom of Israel. Moreover, the prophecy adds that “within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people,” forecasting a decisive collapse.

Historical fulfillment is seen when the Assyrian empire conquered the northern kingdom, destroying Samaria and ending the existence of Ephraim as a distinct people. The prophecy thus served as a warning to Ahaz and Judah: although the Israel‑Syria alliance seemed formidable, its power would be shattered, removing the immediate threat to Judah. The passage reminds readers that divine judgment can overturn even the most intimidating political arrangements, offering both a historical lesson and a theological affirmation of God’s sovereignty over nations.
