Isaiah 7:9

And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliahs sonne: if yee will not beleeue, surely yee shall not be established. Isaiah 7:9 (KJV)

Historical Context:

Isaiah 7:9 is part of a prophecy delivered by the prophet Isaiah to King Ahaz of Judah. At that time the northern kingdom of Israel, often called Ephraim, and the kingdom of Aram (Syria) had formed an alliance and were preparing to attack Judah. Ahaz faced a dilemma: whether to rely on God’s guidance or to seek assistance from the powerful Assyrian empire.

The Message to Ahaz:

In this verse Isaiah addresses the political hierarchy involving Ephraim and Samaria and warns the people of Judah, especially Ahaz, about the consequences of unbelief. The head of Ephraim is identified as Samaria, and the head of Samaria is identified as Remaliah’s son—referred to in the broader context as Pekah, the son of Remaliah.

Identifying the Characters:

  • Ephraim: the northern kingdom of Israel, often named for its dominant tribe.
  • Samaria: the capital city of that kingdom, situated on the hills of Ephraim.
  • Remaliah’s son: the ruler of Samaria, identified as Pekah (or Pekahiah) in the historical record.

Understanding the Message:

Isaiah first points out the existing political hierarchy, then issues a stark warning: if Ahaz and the people of Judah do not believe, they will not be established or stand firm. Their trust in God is presented as essential for security and well‑being.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • The consequences of unbelief: A lack of faith in God’s promises leads to instability, fear, and poor decision‑making.
  • The significance of faith: Faith provides strength, peace, and stability, allowing believers to experience God’s provision and protection.
  • God’s desire for our establishment: God seeks to establish His people, but that establishment is linked to their trust in Him.
  • The importance of seeking God’s guidance: Ahaz’s temptation to rely on human alliances reflects a common tendency; believers are called to seek God first and trust His wisdom.

In summary, Isaiah 7:9 reminds us that faith in God is indispensable. It calls us to trust in His faithfulness, seek His direction, and find our true establishment and stability in Him.
