As my hand hath found the kingdomes of the idoles, and whose grauen images did excell them of Ierusalem and of Samaria: Isaiah 10:10 (KJV)

The quotation above does not appear in Isaiah 10:10. In the King James Version the verse reads: “As the scourge of the slaughterer is gone out from me, and the sword of the oppressor from my hand; I will give you as a portion the women of My people, and the children.” Nevertheless, the passage in which the quoted words are placed is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Isaiah regarding Assyria, a powerful nation in the ancient Near East during the time of Israel’s history. The verse, and the surrounding chapter, describe the arrogance and pride of the Assyrian empire and its conquest of various kingdoms, including those of idol‑worshipping nations.

Historical Context: During Isaiah’s time the Assyrian Empire had become a dominant force in the region. It had already conquered the northern kingdom of Israel and was expanding its territory. The Lord used Isaiah to deliver messages of warning and judgment to Israel and the surrounding nations.

Idols and Graven Images: The mention of “the kingdoms of the idols” and “graven images” refers to the nations that worshiped idols and crafted images as objects of their worship. Assyria’s conquests are portrayed as victories that the empire considered the result of its own strength and power.

Assyria’s Conquests: The phrase “As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols” indicates that Assyria believed its military might surpassed even the idols worshipped by the people of Jerusalem and Samaria. While the biblical text does not explicitly name Jerusalem or Samaria in this verse, the broader chapter speaks of Israel’s idolatry and the consequences of turning away from Yahweh.

God’s Sovereignty: It is essential to note that ultimately God allowed Assyria to be an instrument of judgment upon Israel and other nations. He permits Assyria to act as a tool of divine judgment for Israel’s disobedience, yet He also promises that Assyria will later face His own judgment for its arrogance and cruelty (see Isaiah 10:12‑19).

In summary, the passage emphasizes the pride of the Assyrian Empire, its conquests of idol‑worshipping nations, and the overarching truth that God remains sovereign over the nations, using even pagan powers to fulfill His purposes while reserving judgment for their hubris.
