Isaiah 10:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:09

For the Lord God of hostes shall make a consumption, euen determined in the middest of all the land. Isaiah 10:23 (KJV)

The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that contains messages of judgment, warning, and hope. In this particular verse, Isaiah is speaking about the judgment that will come upon the land, addressing both Israel and the Assyrian empire for their arrogance and oppression.

“Therefore the LORD, the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, doth decree, That they shall be cut off from the land of the living; and that from the midst of the churches they shall have no inheritance.”

The phrase “Lord God of hosts” emphasizes the sovereignty and power of God. It denotes that He is the ruler of heavenly armies and has authority over all creation.

The term “consumption” refers to a complete destruction or devastation, and “determined” indicates that this destruction is certain and purposeful. God, as the judge, has decreed a specific judgment upon the land.

Assyria’s judgment is highlighted in the surrounding context (Isaiah 10:5‑19). Although Assyria was used as an instrument of God, it acted arrogantly, attributing its victories to its own strength and ignoring God’s involvement. The preceding verses (Isaiah 10:20‑22) speak of the remnant of Israel and the determination of God’s judgment upon His people.

Application for believers:

  • a. God’s judgment is certain – this verse reminds us that God is a just judge who will bring judgment upon those who persist in sin and oppression.
  • b. God’s sovereignty – the title “Lord God of hosts” assures us that God is in control, even over powerful nations and rulers, and that He has the final say in all things.
  • c. Trust in God’s justice – when we witness injustice or oppression, we can take comfort that God sees and will bring about justice in due time, calling us to trust in His timing and rely on His wisdom and righteousness.
  • d. Humility before God – the downfall of Assyria because of pride serves as a reminder to cultivate humility, acknowledging God’s authority and seeking His guidance and grace.

In summary, Isaiah 10:23 reminds us of God’s sovereignty, His role as a just judge, and the certainty of His judgments. It warns against arrogance and oppression while encouraging us to trust in God’s justice and humbly submit to His authority.
