Isaiah 16:13

Posted on 18 May at 15:07

“This is the word that the Lord hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, containing messages from God to the people of Israel and other nations. In this particular verse, the focus is on Moab, which was a neighboring nation of Israel.

Historical Background:To understand the significance of Isaiah 16:13, it’s helpful to have some background information. Moab was a nation located east of the Jordan River, and its people were descendants of Lot, the nephew of Abraham (Genesis 19:37). Throughout the Old Testament, Moab’s relationship with Israel was complicated, often marked by conflict and alliances.

God’s Judgment on Moab:The preceding verses in Isaiah 16 describe the impending judgment that God will bring upon Moab. The prophecy speaks of their cities being destroyed and the people being scattered. It is important to note that the judgment against Moab is seen as an act of divine justice for their pride, arrogance, and mistreatment of God’s people.

The Word of the Lord:Isaiah 16:13 states, “This is the word that the Lord hath spoken concerning Moab since that time.” This verse indicates that the message concerning Moab is not a new revelation but a word that the Lord had spoken previously. It suggests that God’s plans for Moab’s judgment were established long before this prophecy was given through Isaiah.

God’s Sovereignty and Foreknowledge:Isaiah 16:13 highlights the sovereignty of God and His omniscience. God, in His wisdom and divine knowledge, knows the future events concerning Moab and reveals them to Isaiah. This verse serves as a reminder that God is not bound by time but sees all things, past, present, and future.
