Isaiah 22:13
“And behold joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating flesh, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for to morrow we shall die.”
Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book found in the Old Testament. It contains prophecies, messages of judgment, and promises of restoration for the people of Israel. In this particular verse, the prophet Isaiah is delivering a message from God concerning the sinful behaviour of the people of Jerusalem.
Meaning:In Isaiah 22:13, the prophet describes the attitude and behaviour of the people in Jerusalem during a time of crisis. Instead of seeking God and repenting of their sins, they indulge in excessive feasting, revelry, and self-indulgence. The phrase, “let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die,” reflects their fatalistic mindset, where they have given up hope and abandoned any sense of responsibility or accountability.
Application:
- Prioritising God:As believers, we should prioritise our relationship with God and seek Him earnestly. We should not allow the pursuit of worldly pleasures to overshadow our devotion to Him.
- Responsible Living:While enjoying the blessings of life is not inherently wrong, we should exercise wisdom and moderation in our indulgences. We must remember that our time on earth is limited, and we should live responsibly, being mindful of our spiritual journey and impact on others.
- A Kingdom Perspective:Rather than adopting a fatalistic mindset, we are called to have a heavenly perspective on life. We should strive to build God’s kingdom, impacting the lives of others positively, and living with hope and purpose.
