Isaiah 38:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:06
Listen to this article

“Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.”

Context:Isaiah 38 is part of the historical account of King Hezekiah’s illness and miraculous recovery. In this chapter, Hezekiah becomes severely ill and is near death. He prays to God for healing, and God sends the prophet Isaiah to deliver a message of assurance.

Prayer and God’s Response:Hezekiah’s prayer is characterized by his deep faith and trust in God. Despite the severity of his illness, he seeks God’s intervention and pours out his heart before Him. God, in His mercy, hears Hezekiah’s prayer, sees his tears, and responds with a promise of healing.

God’s Sovereignty:The statement, “Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father,” emphasizes God’s authority and sovereignty. By referring to David, God reminds Hezekiah of His covenant with David’s lineage and His faithfulness to His promises. It reassures Hezekiah that his prayer has reached the ears of the Almighty God.

God’s Assurance:God’s response to Hezekiah’s prayer is twofold: First, He acknowledges that He has heard the prayer. Second, He declares that He will add fifteen years to Hezekiah’s life. This promise of extended life is a demonstration of God’s grace and mercy towards Hezekiah, and it reveals God’s power to intervene in the affairs of human life.

Faith and Prayer:Hezekiah’s story reminds us of the power of faith and prayer. Despite facing a dire situation, Hezekiah turns to God, trusting in His ability to heal and deliver him. This passage encourages believers to approach God with their petitions, knowing that He is a compassionate and responsive God.

God’s Timing:It is worth noting that God’s promise to add fifteen years to Hezekiah’s life does not mean that everyone who prays for healing will receive the same outcome. God’s plans and purposes are often beyond human understanding. In Hezekiah’s case, God had a specific purpose in extending his life, but ultimately, the timing and nature of answered prayers rest in God’s wisdom.

Gratitude and Testimony:Hezekiah’s healing serves as a powerful testimony to God’s faithfulness. After his recovery, Hezekiah composes a psalm of thanksgiving, which is recorded in Isaiah 38:9-20. He acknowledges God’s mercy and expresses his gratitude for the second chance at life. This teaches us the importance of giving thanks to God for answered prayers and sharing our testimonies to encourage others in their faith.

In conclusion, Isaiah 38:5 reveals the compassionate nature of God, His sovereignty over human affairs, and the power of faith and prayer. Hezekiah’s story encourages believers to approach God with their deepest concerns, trusting in His mercy and provision. It also reminds us to express gratitude and share our testimonies when God answers our prayers.
