Isaiah 41:22

Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.

Isaiah 41:22 (KJV)

Isaiah 41:22 belongs to a courtroom-style challenge in which God summons the idols and their worshippers to present their case (Isaiah 41:21-24). The prophet calls the false gods to produce evidence of their power, specifically their ability to predict the future. This challenge exposes their impotence and contrasts it with the LORD’s unique sovereignty.

The verse presents a twofold test. The idols must either “shew the former things“—explain past events and their outcomes so that their accuracy can be examined—or “declare us things for to come.” If they cannot do either, they prove themselves false. The challenge is not merely intellectual; it is a call to recognize that only God can be trusted to reveal what will happen.

In the surrounding passage, Isaiah emphasizes that God alone declares the end from the beginning (Isaiah 41:26; 46:9-10). The LORD’s mighty acts in history and His faithfulness to Israel demonstrate His unique predictive power. This verse underscores the biblical principle that true divinity is proven by sovereign knowledge of history and the future.

This verse serves as a reminder that the God of Israel is the only true God, worthy of worship and trust. It challenges the false gods and idols, which are incapable of accurately predicting the future or bringing about significant events. For readers today, it invites us to place our confidence in God alone, who knows the end from the beginning, rather than in human speculation or false religious claims.

Isaiah 41:22 emphasizes the futility of placing trust in anything other than the one true God. It underscores God’s unique ability to declare and shape the course of events, inviting people to recognize His sovereignty and submit to His authority.
