Isaiah 48:4

Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass;

Isaiah 48:4 (KJV)

Isaiah 48:4 sits within a larger passage where God addresses the people of Israel, exposing their long history of disobedience and stubbornness. The verse opens with God’s declaration, “Because I knew,” revealing His complete knowledge of His people. God’s omniscience gives Him full insight into human hearts, thoughts, actions, and motives.

The Hebrew word translated “obstinate” (kesheh) means “hard,” describing a hard-hearted, rebellious people who contradict God. The phrase “thy neck is an iron sinew” pictures a stiff-necked, inflexible nation, unwilling to accept God’s yoke or submit to His will. The words “thy brow brass” depict an impudent people, unashamed of sin and refusing correction. Together, these images portray unyielding resistance to God’s commands and warnings.

God’s foreknowledge of this obstinacy is not passive. In the following verse, Isaiah 48:5, God explains that He declared things from the beginning so Israel could not claim, “Mine idol hath done them.” His advance revelation prevented them, as far as possible, from attributing His works to idols. Even toward a stubborn people, God acted with care to guard the truth.

Isaiah 48:4 calls us to examine our own hearts for hardness. It warns of the danger of resisting God’s guidance and the consequences of an unyielding spirit. We are encouraged to pursue humility, obedience, and a willingness to submit to God’s shaping, trusting that He knows our true condition and still works to reveal Himself.

  • God’s Faithfulness and Patience: Despite Israel’s stubbornness, God remained faithful and patient, continuing to reach out with forgiveness and opportunities for repentance. His knowledge of our weakness does not stop His mercy.

God’s diagnosis of human hard-heartedness is also an invitation. He knows exactly what we are like, yet He still speaks, warns, and calls us back. The same God who saw Israel’s iron neck and brass brow offers grace to soften our hearts and bend our wills to Him.
