Isaiah 51:23

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee: which haue said to thy soule, Bow downe that wee may goe ouer: and thou hast laide thy body as the ground, and as the streete to them that went ouer. Isaiah 51:23 (KJV)

Isaiah 51:23 is part of a larger passage in which the prophet Isaiah speaks words of comfort and encouragement to the people of Israel. Throughout the book of Isaiah the prophet addresses both the present situation of Israel and future events, often emphasizing God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

The phrase “I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee” signifies that God will place the cup of trembling—judgment—into the hands of the oppressors themselves, so that they will bear the consequences of their cruelty. The oppressors are depicted as saying to the soul of Israel, “Bow down, that we may go over,” a demand that reveals their arrogance and desire to trample Israel’s dignity. Israel, in response, is described as having laid its body “as the ground and as the street,” allowing the oppressors to walk over it.

“Thus saith the LORD, He that is high and lifted up, the King of glory, the LORD, He that dwelleth in the heavens; He shall bring down from his throne all the princes of the earth.” This declaration underscores the Lord’s supreme authority over earthly powers and His intent to humble the proud rulers of the world.

The verse therefore promises a reversal of roles: those who forced Israel to bow will themselves be subjected to God’s judgment. The broader chapter of Isaiah 51 continues this theme of reassurance, promising that God will uphold the afflicted, restore Zion, and establish everlasting righteousness.

Believers are urged to trust in God’s sovereignty, to find hope in His promised deliverance, and to rest in the assurance that divine justice will prevail over any oppression. The passage serves as a reminder of God’s ultimate authority, His faithfulness, and His commitment to defend and vindicate His people.
