Isaiah 55:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:05

“Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.”

Isaiah 55:3 (KJV):

“Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.”

Historical and Contextual Background:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that contains the prophecies of the prophet Isaiah. The context of Isaiah 55 is a call to the people of Israel to return to the Lord and find salvation and restoration. This chapter focuses on God’s invitation for His people to receive abundant blessings and forgiveness.

“Incline your ear, and come unto me”:This phrase is an invitation from God to His people to pay attention and come closer to Him. It indicates a desire for the people to listen attentively and respond to God’s call. It emphasizes the importance of actively seeking a relationship with God.

“Hear, and your soul shall live”:This phrase highlights the connection between listening to God’s words and finding true life. It suggests that spiritual life and vitality are found in hearing and obeying God’s message. By listening to God’s words, His people can experience true fulfillment and purpose.

“I will make an everlasting covenant with you”:God promises to establish an everlasting covenant with His people. In biblical terms, a covenant is a binding agreement between God and His people, which outlines their relationship and mutual responsibilities. This covenant signifies God’s faithfulness and commitment to His promises.

“Even the sure mercies of David”:The “sure mercies of David” refer to the promises made to King David, particularly the promise of an eternal dynasty and a descendant who would establish an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12-16). This promise finds its fulfilment in Jesus Christ, who is a descendant of David and the ultimate fulfilment of the Messianic hope.

Application:

  • Isaiah 55:3:speaks to believers today, inviting them to seek a close relationship with God and to listen attentively to His word. It emphasises the importance of recognising that true life and spiritual fulfilment come from aligning ourselves with God’s purposes and obeying His commands.

As believers, we are invited to enter into a covenant relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. This covenant is based on God’s faithfulness and His promise to forgive our sins and grant us eternal life. We can find assurance and security in the unchanging nature of God’s promises, just as the “sure mercies of David” were fulfilled in Jesus.

In summary, Isaiah 55:3 encourages us to incline our ears, come to God, and listen to His words. Through this, we can experience true life, enter into an everlasting covenant with Him, and partake in the sure mercies promised through Jesus Christ.
