Jeremiah 6:9

Listen to this article

“Thus saith the Lord of hosts, They shall throughly glean the remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets.”

Context:It is important to understand the context of a verse to grasp its meaning fully. Jeremiah was a prophet during the decline and impending destruction of the Kingdom of Judah. God spoke through Jeremiah to warn the people of their sins and the judgment that would come upon them if they did not repent. In this particular verse, God is describing the impending judgment that would thoroughly glean the remnant of Israel.

Symbolism of the Vine:In biblical imagery, the vine often represents the people of Israel. God frequently referred to Israel as His vineyard, with Himself as the caretaker and the people as the vines. Here, God compares the judgment that would befall Israel to the process of thoroughly gleaning a vine.

Thorough Gleaning:Gleaning refers to the act of gathering the remaining grapes after the initial harvest. It is a process of meticulous gathering to ensure that no grape is left behind. In the same way, God declares that the judgment on Israel would be comprehensive and thorough. No remnant of unrepentant people would escape His judgment.

Grapegatherer’s Baskets:The phrase turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets signifies the action of collecting the gleaned grapes in the baskets. This imagery emphasizes the certainty and completeness of the judgment that God would bring upon Israel. God would gather His judgment like a grapegatherer collects the gleaned grapes, leaving no room for escape or mercy.

Application:Although this verse specifically addresses the impending judgment on Israel, there are broader principles we can draw from it. It serves as a reminder of God’s righteousness, justice, and the consequences of unrepentant sin. It highlights the importance of heeding God’s warnings and turning back to Him in times of waywardness and disobedience.

In summary, Jeremiah 6:9 portrays God’s impending judgment on Israel as a thorough gleaning of the vine. The metaphor underscores the completeness and certainty of the judgment that would befall the unrepentant people. This verse serves as a reminder of the consequences of sin and the need for repentance in our lives.
