Jeremiah 8:7

Yea the Storke in the heauen knoweth her appointed times, and the turtle, and the crane, and the swallow obserue the time of their coming; but my people know not the iudgement of the Lord. Jeremiah 8:7 (KJV)

Jeremiah was a prophet in ancient Judah during a time of great spiritual decline and disobedience to God. He was called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people of Judah. In this verse Jeremiah draws a comparison between the natural instinct of birds and the lack of spiritual discernment among God’s people. The stork, turtle (turtledove), crane, and swallow are mentioned as examples of birds that have an innate sense of timing and understanding. They know when to migrate and return each year, fulfilling their God‑given instincts.

The birds’ ability to discern their appointed times highlights God’s design and order in the natural world. It also serves as a rebuke to the people of Judah, who, despite being God’s chosen people, lack understanding and fail to recognise the righteous judgment of the Lord. The people were spiritually blind and ignorant of God’s ways, and their failure to perceive the Lord’s judgment led to their downfall.

This verse carries a message for believers today. It emphasises the importance of spiritual discernment and knowledge of God’s judgment. We are called to seek understanding of God’s will through studying His Word, prayer, and cultivating a close relationship with Him. Just as the birds obey their natural instincts, we should strive to align our lives with God’s truth and purpose.

Throughout the book of Jeremiah, the consequences of Judah’s spiritual ignorance and disobedience are repeatedly emphasised. God’s judgment was imminent and would befall the nation because of their refusal to acknowledge and repent of their sins. The people’s lack of understanding and failure to discern God’s judgment resulted in their downfall, underscoring the urgent need for today’s believers to heed divine warning and pursue godly wisdom.
