Jeremiah 11:5

Listen to this article

“That I may perform the oath which I have sworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and said, Amen, O Lord.”

Context:Jeremiah was a prophet called by God to deliver His messages to the people of Judah. The book of Jeremiah contains prophecies, warnings, and calls to repentance for the nation of Judah. In chapter 11, Jeremiah receives a message from the Lord concerning the covenant made with their ancestors, specifically addressing the people’s disobedience and their failure to keep the terms of the covenant.

The Covenant Promise:God reminds the people of Judah about the oath He swore to their fathers. This refers to the covenant made between God and the Israelites when He brought them out of Egypt and promised to give them a land flowing with milk and honey. This promise was part of the covenant established with Abraham (Genesis 12:1-3) and reiterated with Moses and the Israelites (Exodus 3:17).

A Land Flowing with Milk and Honey:The phrase “land flowing with milk and honey” is a metaphorical description of a fertile and prosperous land. It signifies abundance, blessing, and the fulfilment of God’s promises to His people. It highlights the goodness and richness of the land that God intended to give them. It indicates a place where their needs would be met and where they would thrive as a nation.

The Response of Jeremiah:Upon hearing God’s reminder of the covenant, Jeremiah responds with a heartfelt “Amen, O Lord.” This response expresses Jeremiah’s affirmation and agreement with God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. It reflects his acknowledgement of God’s righteousness and his understanding of the significance of the covenant relationship between God and His people.

Lessons and Application:

  • God’s Faithfulness:The verse reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His promises. Despite the unfaithfulness and disobedience of the people of Judah, God still remembers His covenant and intends to fulfil it. This teaches us that God remains faithful even when we fail. We can trust in His promises and rely on His steadfast love.
  • Covenant Relationship:The verse underscores the importance of the covenant relationship between God and His people. God desires obedience and faithfulness from His people. Just as the people of Judah were called to honour their part in the covenant, we are also called to live in obedience to God’s commands and walk in a close relationship with Him.
  • The Land as a Blessing:The mention of a land flowing with milk and honey reminds us that God’s promises include both physical and spiritual blessings. While the specific land promised to the Israelites was the physical territory of Canaan, the concept of a land flowing with milk and honey extends to the blessings of provision, abundance, and spiritual nourishment that God bestows upon His people.
  • Our Response:Like Jeremiah, we should respond to God’s faithfulness and promises with a resounding “Amen.” We can affirm God’s goodness, thank Him for His faithfulness, and commit ourselves to live in accordance with His will. We should also seek to honour the covenant relationship we have with God, obeying His commands and walking in fellowship with Him.
