Jeremiah 17:14
Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved: for thou art my praise.
Jeremiah 17:14 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah ministered during a turbulent period in Judah’s history, when the nation had turned away from God through disobedience and idolatry. His prophetic warnings pointed to coming judgment, yet in this verse he turns to the Lord with a deeply personal prayer for healing and salvation.
Meaning
Jeremiah’s cry, “Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved,” expresses complete dependence on God. The prophet acknowledges that true healing—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—can come only from the Lord. He does not rely on his own strength or merit but trusts that if God acts, the healing and salvation will be thorough and effective.
The final clause, “for thou art my praise,” reveals the foundation of Jeremiah’s confidence. Even in the midst of suffering and uncertainty, he affirms that God alone is worthy of worship and adoration. God is not only the source of deliverance but also the object of his praise, the reason for his hope and joy.
Application
Jeremiah’s prayer resonates with believers today who face difficulties, challenges, and the need for restoration. It teaches us to approach God humbly with our needs, acknowledging our dependence on Him for healing and restoration. We can find true healing and salvation in God alone, trusting in His power to deliver us no matter the circumstances.
Even in times of trial, we should maintain an attitude of praise and worship. God remains deserving of our adoration regardless of our situation. Jeremiah’s example encourages us to turn to the Lord in our times of need, relying on His faithfulness and power to bring restoration and deliverance.
Reflection
Jeremiah’s prayer invites us to examine our own hearts. Do we truly believe that God can heal and save? Do we look to Him as our ultimate source of hope and joy? When we cry out to the Lord with the same dependent faith, we can rest in the assurance that He hears and responds according to His perfect will.
