Jeremiah 21:6

“And I will smite the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast: they shall die of a great pestilence.”

Certainly! Let’s delve into Jeremiah 21:6 in the King James Version of the Bible. It reads as follows:

Jeremiah 21:6 is part of a prophecy given by the prophet Jeremiah to King Zedekiah of Judah during the time when Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonian army. The context of this verse is crucial to understanding its significance.

In the preceding verses, King Zedekiah sent Pashhur, the son of Malchiah, and Zephaniah the priest to Jeremiah to inquire about the outcome of the siege and whether God would intervene to deliver them from the Babylonians. The king hoped for a favourable response, but Jeremiah was tasked with delivering a message of warning and judgment from the Lord.

In Jeremiah 21:6, God informs the king and the inhabitants of Jerusalem that they will face severe consequences for their rebellion and idolatry. The phrase “I will smite the inhabitants of this city” indicates God’s intention to bring judgment upon the people.

The judgment is described as a “great pestilence,” which refers to a deadly epidemic or disease that would cause widespread suffering and death. This pestilence was one of the judgments that God would bring upon Jerusalem as a result of their disobedience and refusal to turn back to Him.

It’s important to note that throughout the book of Jeremiah, the prophet repeatedly warned the people of Judah about the impending destruction and exile if they did not repent and turn back to God. However, their disobedience and idolatry persisted, leading to the fulfilment of these prophecies.

This verse serves as a reminder of God’s justice and the consequences of turning away from Him. It highlights the importance of obedience and faithfulness to God’s commandments. While this specific prophecy was directed to the ancient people of Judah, it carries a broader message about the consequences of sin and the need for repentance for all people.
