Jeremiah 23:21

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.”

Context:The book of Jeremiah contains the prophecies and messages of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah during a time of great spiritual and moral decline. Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages of warning and judgment to the people and their leaders.

False Prophets:In this verse, God is expressing His displeasure with the false prophets who claimed to speak for Him but were not actually sent by Him. These false prophets were running ahead, zealously proclaiming their own messages without receiving any genuine word from God.

Unsanctioned Prophecies:God makes it clear that He had not spoken to these prophets, and yet they continued to prophesy. They were delivering their own ideas, dreams, or false messages, misleading the people and leading them astray. These false prophets were not operating under the authority and guidance of God.

God’s Authority:This verse emphasizes the authority and sovereignty of God in choosing and sending prophets. True prophets were to be messengers of God, speaking His words accurately and faithfully. False prophets, on the other hand, spoke out of their own imaginations and desires, claiming divine inspiration that they did not possess.

Warning for the People:Through this verse, God is warning the people of Judah to discern between the true and false prophets. They were not to be deceived by those who claimed to speak on God’s behalf but were not genuinely sent by Him. The people were to test the spirits and judge the content of the prophecies against the revealed Word of God.

Application:This verse has relevance for us today as well. It reminds us of the importance of discernment in evaluating spiritual leaders, teachers, and prophets. We should carefully examine their messages, comparing them with the teachings of the Bible. False teachers and prophets can lead us astray if we are not grounded in the truth of God’s Word.

  • In conclusion:Jeremiah 23:21 highlights God’s displeasure with false prophets who claimed to speak for Him without His authorization. It serves as a warning to the people to exercise discernment and to be cautious in accepting the words of those who claim to be speaking on behalf of God.
