Jeremiah 23:22

“But if they had stood in my counsel, and had caused my people to hear my words, then they should have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their doings.”

The central message of Jeremiah 23:22 focuses on the profound responsibility of those who speak for God and the transformative power of God's true counsel. In the days of Jeremiah, the nation of Judah was plagued by false prophets who failed to stand in the Lord's presence and proclaim His authentic message. Had these leaders truly sought God’s counsel, their ministry would have produced the fruit of repentance, turning the people away from their evil deeds.

The Tragedy of False Comfort

Instead of addressing the severe spiritual sickness of the nation, the false prophets of Jeremiah's time spoke deceitfully. They offered false comfort, crying peace when there was no peace. Because they neglected their responsibility and followed their own imaginations, they enabled the people to persist in their stubbornness and evil hearts. God's true messengers, like Jeremiah, understood that proclaiming the unaltered word of the Lord was essential, even when it was offensive or met with resistance.

The Power of Authentic Divine Counsel

Authentic divine counsel always confronts sin and calls for repentance. The purpose of God’s word is not to flatter or provide superficial reassurance, but to align people with His holy covenant. When the word is faithfully declared, it possesses the power to awaken the conscience and turn hearts from evil. If the spiritual leaders had truly listened to God and declared His words, they would have addressed the spiritual wounds of the people with truth, averting disaster and bringing genuine healing.

Our Call to Abide in Truth

For believers today, a commitment to hearing and heeding God's voice is paramount. We are called to abide deeply in the word of God. Those who are entrusted with sharing God's truth must ensure they are standing in His counsel, rather than merely echoing the wisdom of the age. We must not shrink from declaring the full counsel of God, recognizing that the transformative effect of the gospel hinges on an uncompromising encounter with the truth. Only God's authentic word can turn individuals from their evil ways and lead them in the paths of righteousness.
