Jeremiah 27:9

Listen to this article

Therefore hearken not ye to your prophets, nor to your diuiners, nor to your dreamers, nor to your inchanters, nor to your sorcerers, which speak vnto you, saying; Ye shall not serue the king of Babylon: Jeremiah 27:9 (KJV)

Jeremiah was called by God to deliver messages to the people of Judah during a time of political turmoil and impending exile. In this verse he conveys a divine warning against listening to false prophets, diviners, dreamers, enchanters, and sorcerers who urged the nation to resist serving the king of Babylon. The historical backdrop is the Babylonian empire under King Nebuchadnezzar, whose domination was part of God’s judgment on Judah.

Trust in God’s Sovereignty

The passage underscores that God governs the course of history and the rise and fall of nations. Even when the people’s desire was to oppose Babylonian rule, God instructed them to submit for a designated period as part of His sovereign plan. Believers are therefore called to trust God’s ultimate purposes, even when those purposes seem contrary to personal wishes or expectations.

Discerning False Prophets

Jeremiah’s warning highlights the need for vigilance in testing the spirits (see 1 John 4:1). The false teachers of the day propagated messages that contradicted God’s command, offering false hope of swift victory over Babylon. The same principle applies today: Christians must discern true doctrine from error through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

Submission and Obedience

The verse emphasizes obedience to God’s directives, even when they appear counter‑cultural or uncomfortable. Just as Judah was to accept Babylonian domination as part of divine judgment, believers are called to submit to God’s authority and obey His commandments, trusting that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8‑9).

Lessons for Today

While the immediate context concerns the Babylonian exile, the broader principles are timeless. Trust in God’s sovereign plan, exercise discernment against false teachings, and practice humble obedience. Seeking wisdom through prayer and Scripture equips us to navigate challenging circumstances and remain loyal to God’s kingdom despite opposing messages from the world.

In summary, Jeremiah 27:9 calls the people to reject the deceptive counsel of false prophets, to trust in God’s sovereign control over nations, and to submit obediently to His revealed will. The passage invites every believer to rely on God’s ultimate plan and purpose in all situations, holding fast to His kingdom above all earthly pressures.
