Jeremiah 29:24
Thus shalt thou also speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite, saying,
Jeremiah 29:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to a letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent to the Jewish exiles in Babylon. The letter was addressed to the elders, priests, prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon (Jeremiah 29:1). In that letter, Jeremiah conveyed God’s instructions and encouragement, including the promise of future restoration. Verse 24 turns to a specific confrontation: Jeremiah is told to speak to Shemaiah the Nehelamite.
Shemaiah was a false prophet among the exiles. He opposed Jeremiah’s message and sought to mislead the people with his own deceptive prophecies. During this time, false prophets were proclaiming that the exile would be short and that the people would soon return to Jerusalem. Shemaiah was one of those who resisted Jeremiah’s warning of a prolonged exile and the need to submit to Babylonian rule.
Meaning
The name “Nehelamite” likely indicates Shemaiah’s family or place of origin, though its exact meaning is uncertain. The verse introduces the judgment that follows in Jeremiah 29:25-32. There, Jeremiah reveals that Shemaiah had sent letters to the priests in Jerusalem, accusing Jeremiah of being a madman and urging them to put him in stocks and restraints. Shemaiah’s intention was to undermine Jeremiah’s authority and discredit his prophecies.
Despite Shemaiah’s attempts, Jeremiah responds with a warning from the Lord. He declares that God had not sent Shemaiah, and Jeremiah 29:32 states that Shemaiah and his descendants would face judgment because of his false prophecies and rebellion against God.
Application
Jeremiah 29:24 calls for discernment. Believers are to weigh every teaching against Scripture, knowing that false prophets can arise even among God’s people. The verse also warns of the consequences of false prophecy: those who claim to speak for God while contradicting His revealed message will be held accountable.
Reflection
God sees the actions and words of those who oppose His messengers, and He addresses them directly. His word stands against all opposition, and His truth will prevail.
