Jeremiah 31:2

“Thus saith the Lord, The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.”

Context:Jeremiah was a prophet who lived during a tumultuous time in Israel’s history. The people had turned away from God and were facing the consequences of their disobedience. In the midst of judgment, God offers a message of hope and restoration through Jeremiah.

The people left of the sword:The phrase “left of the sword” refers to the remnant of Israel who survived the destruction and exile brought upon them by the invading Babylonian armies. The majority of the people were killed or taken captive, but a few remained.

Found grace in the wilderness:Despite the difficult circumstances they faced, the remnant of Israel found grace or favour from God even in the wilderness. The wilderness can symbolise a place of desolation, hardship, and testing. God’s grace is seen in His provision, protection, and restoration for His people.

Israel’s restoration and rest:God declares that when He went to cause Israel to rest, the people found grace in the wilderness. This verse hints at the future restoration and rest God would bring to His people. It points to a time of peace, security, and spiritual renewal. In the broader context of Jeremiah, this restoration ultimately refers to the return of the exiles from Babylon and the reestablishment of the nation of Israel.
