Jeremiah 33:20
Thus saith the Lord; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season;
Jeremiah 33:20 (KJV)
Context
Jeremiah spoke this word from the Lord while Judah faced imminent destruction and exile because of disobedience. In the surrounding passage, God promises to restore the fortunes of Judah and Israel and to raise up a righteous Branch from David. This verse uses the unbreakable order of day and night to assure the people that His covenant with David is just as certain.
Meaning
The phrase “covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night” poetically describes the fixed order of creation that God established and maintains. The regular succession of light and darkness is not random; it is a binding agreement set by the Creator. By saying “If ye can break” this covenant, God presents a hypothetical impossibility. Just as no one can stop the sun from rising or the night from falling, no one can break the promises He has made to His people.
This verse highlights God’s unchanging nature. He is dependable and faithful in upholding His word. The predictable rhythm of day and night serves as a constant reminder of His sovereignty and the ordered structure He has set over creation. Because God governs the natural world with perfect faithfulness, His covenantal promises are equally secure.
Biblical connections
The same certainty is echoed in Genesis 8:22, where God promises that seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease while the earth remains. Both passages tie the stability of creation to the reliability of God’s word. Here, the unbreakable covenant with day and night guarantees the permanence of His promises to David and the Levites.
Application
For believers today, this verse reassures us that God’s faithfulness does not waver, even when circumstances are difficult. Just as we trust that morning will follow night, we can trust that God will fulfill every promise He has made. His covenant with David ultimately points to Christ, the righteous Branch, and the eternal kingdom He established. In times of uncertainty, the steady rising of the sun reminds us that God’s word is reliable and His promises are sure.
Reflection
Consider how often you take the daily cycle of day and night for granted. Yet that very cycle is a visible sign of God’s covenant faithfulness. If He upholds the sun and moon in their appointed seasons, He will certainly uphold His spiritual promises to you. Let the morning light and the evening darkness remind you that God’s covenant love never fails.
