Jeremiah 37:15

Listen to this article

“Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah and smote him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.”

Context:To better understand Jeremiah 37:15, it’s important to examine the surrounding verses and the historical context. Jeremiah was a prophet during the time of the Babylonian invasion of Judah. In this particular passage, Jerusalem was under siege by the Babylonians, and King Zedekiah sent messengers to inquire of Jeremiah concerning the outcome of the siege.

Persecution of the Prophet:In this verse, we see that the princes of Judah, who were likely advisors to King Zedekiah, became angry with Jeremiah for his prophecies. They physically assaulted him and threw him into prison. The reason behind their anger was likely due to Jeremiah’s consistent message of impending judgment and destruction if the people did not turn back to God.

The Faithfulness of Jeremiah:Despite the mistreatment he endured, Jeremiah remained faithful to his calling as a prophet. He continued to speak the word of the Lord, even in the face of opposition and persecution. Jeremiah’s unwavering commitment to deliver God’s message, regardless of the consequences, serves as an example of obedience and faithfulness to believers today.

  • Trusting in God’s Sovereignty:Although Jeremiah faced imprisonment, his story does not end there. God continued to protect and deliver him throughout his prophetic ministry. Eventually, Jeremiah was released from prison and witnessed the fulfillment of his prophecies. This teaches us that even in the midst of trials and persecution, we can trust in God’s sovereignty. He is in control, and He will accomplish His purposes, even if we face hardships along the way.
