Now when Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, one of þ eunuches which was in the kings house, heard that they had put Ieremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Beniamin) Jeremiah 38:7 (KJV)

Jeremiah 38:7 is a verse found within the book of Jeremiah, one of the major prophetic books in the Old Testament. This verse introduces Ebed‑melech, an Ethiopian eunuch who served in the king’s house during Jeremiah’s prophetic ministry. In the preceding chapters Jeremiah warned Judah about God’s impending judgment because of their disobedience and idolatry, and his messages faced strong opposition, leading to persecution from religious leaders and even the king. In this passage Jeremiah was thrown into a pit and imprisoned in the dungeon as a result of his prophetic ministry. The king at the time was Zedekiah, ruler of Judah, who is noted as sitting at the gate of Benjamin, indicating his authority in judging matters. Ebed‑melech, upon hearing that Jeremiah had been cast into the pit, was moved with compassion and concern and, despite the risks, took action to rescue the prophet. This verse highlights Ebed‑melech’s faithfulness and courage in contrast to those who sought to silence Jeremiah, illustrating themes of compassion, standing for righteousness amid opposition, and the importance of helping the oppressed. Overall, Jeremiah 38:7 provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by the prophet and the presence of individuals like Ebed‑melech, who played a significant role in Jeremiah’s eventual release from the pit. It also underscores the themes of faithfulness, compassion, and standing up for what is right, even in the face of opposition. A comprehensive study of this verse would examine the subsequent verses and the broader context of Jeremiah’s ministry for deeper insight.
