Listen to this article

“Then the king commanded Ebed-melech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with thee, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.”

Context:Jeremiah 38:10 is part of the account of Jeremiah’s imprisonment during the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah. The king was persuaded by his officials to throw Jeremiah into a muddy cistern (dungeon) because his prophecies were not favourable towards the nation. However, Ebed-Melech, an Ethiopian eunuch and a servant of the king, interceded on Jeremiah’s behalf and appealed to the king to rescue him from the cistern.

Themes and lessons from Jeremiah 38:10:

God’s faithfulness:Despite Jeremiah’s difficult circumstances, God raised up a person like Ebed-Melech to rescue him. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness in providing help and protection for His faithful servants even in the midst of adversity.

Compassion and mercy:Ebed-Melech’s act of intercession reveals his compassionate heart and his concern for justice. He recognised the injustice of Jeremiah’s imprisonment and took action to rectify it. This passage reminds us of the importance of showing compassion and mercy towards those who are suffering or facing injustice.

Courage in standing for truth:Jeremiah’s imprisonment was a result of his commitment to delivering God’s messages faithfully. Despite the opposition and threats he faced, Jeremiah continued to speak the truth fearlessly. This verse reminds us of the need for courage in standing for God’s truth, even when it is unpopular or brings personal hardship.

The value of intercession:Ebed-Melech’s intercession on behalf of Jeremiah played a crucial role in his rescue. Intercession involves standing in the gap for others, praying on their behalf, and taking action when possible. This passage highlights the power of intercession and the impact it can have on the lives of those in need.

God’s care for the marginalised:Ebed-Melech was an Ethiopian eunuch, considered a marginalised person in the society of that time. God used him to deliver Jeremiah from the dungeon, emphasising God’s concern for all people, regardless of their social status or background. This verse reminds us that God values every individual and can work through anyone to accomplish His purposes.

  • Trust in God’s faithfulness:When facing difficult situations, remember that God is faithful and can provide help and deliverance even in the midst of adversity.
  • Show compassion and mercy:Seek opportunities to extend compassion and mercy to those who are suffering or facing injustice, just as Ebed-Melech did for Jeremiah. Look for ways to advocate for those who are marginalised or oppressed.
  • Stand for truth courageously:Like Jeremiah, be willing to stand for God’s truth even when it is unpopular or brings personal challenges. Trust in God’s strength and rely on His guidance as you speak truthfully and faithfully.
  • Engage in intercession:Develop a habit of interceding for others in prayer, especially those who are in need or facing difficult circumstances. Consider taking action where possible to help bring about positive change.
  • Recognise God’s value of all people:Remember that every individual is valuable in God’s sight, regardless of their background or social status. Treat others with respect, dignity, and love, reflecting God’s heart for all people.

By studying and reflecting on Jeremiah 38:10, we can gain insights into God’s faithfulness, compassion, and our role in standing for truth, interceding for others, and valuing all people.
