Jeremiah 44:16

As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the Lord, we will not hearken unto thee.

Jeremiah 44:16 (KJV)

Jeremiah was a prophet of God who lived during the final days of the southern kingdom of Judah. He was called by God to deliver a message of warning and judgment to the people of Judah because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. This verse is part of a larger passage in which Jeremiah addresses the remnant of Judah who had fled to Egypt after the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon, a flight that was itself contrary to God’s command to remain in the land.

In Jeremiah 44, the prophet confronts the Jewish refugees in Egypt who continued to worship and burn incense to foreign gods, despite God’s repeated warnings against such practices. In verse 16, the people respond to Jeremiah’s message by rejecting his words and declaring that they will not listen to him or follow the instructions he delivers on behalf of the Lord.

The people’s reply is a deliberate, verbal refusal. They do not simply ignore Jeremiah; they openly declare that they will not hearken to the word spoken in the name of the Lord. This reveals a hardened heart and a settled determination to continue in idolatry, even after witnessing the judgment that had already fallen on Jerusalem.

Their rejection also shows that they did not believe the message truly came from God, or if they did, they were resolved not to obey. This defiance illustrates the danger of persistent disobedience: it dulls the conscience and leads to open rebellion against divine warning. The bluntness of their answer underscores how thoroughly sin had corrupted their judgment, so that they could hear the prophet’s call and still refuse without hesitation.

The people’s stubbornness echoes the broader pattern of Israel’s history, where God sent prophets to call His people back to obedience, and they refused to listen. Their refusal to hearken to Jeremiah’s message is a direct contrast to the call in Deuteronomy to obey the voice of the Lord and keep His commandments, a call that had been central to Israel’s covenant relationship with God from the beginning.

Jeremiah 44:16 reminds us of the importance of heeding God’s word and obeying His commands. It serves as a warning against stubbornness and rebellion, urging us to examine our own lives and repent of any idolatry or disobedience that might hinder our relationship with God. We should be willing to listen to God’s messengers, whether through His written word, the Bible, or through the teachings of wise and godly individuals in our lives. Let us humbly submit to His will and strive to follow His instructions, knowing that obedience brings blessings and a closer walk with our Heavenly Father.

Human defiance does not nullify God’s word; rather, it brings judgment. Yet even in the face of such rebellion, God had continued to send His prophet, demonstrating His mercy and longsuffering nature. His desire was for the people to repent and turn back to Him, even at this late stage. This same mercy is extended to us today, inviting us to humble ourselves and seek His forgiveness before our own hearts grow too hard to respond.
