Jeremiah 48:25

The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the Lord.

Jeremiah 48:25 (KJV)

The book of Jeremiah records the prophet’s messages to Judah and the surrounding nations during a time of political turmoil. In this verse, Jeremiah pronounces judgment against Moab, a nation descended from Lot and located east of the Jordan River and the Dead Sea. The broader prophecy in Jeremiah 48 lists many of Moab’s cities that would be affected, showing the totality of the coming destruction.

The verse declares, “The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the LORD.” In biblical symbolism, the horn often represents strength, power, and honor, like the horn of a bull. The arm represents might and the ability to act, especially in warfare. Cutting off the horn and breaking the arm signify the complete removal of Moab’s power and its inability to defend itself or harm others. The Targum interprets the horn as the kingdom and the arm as the rulers, indicating that both national strength and leadership are destroyed.

The concluding phrase, “saith the LORD,” shows that this is not Jeremiah’s personal opinion but a divine decree. God is the ultimate authority, and the judgment against Moab is certain and irreversible because it comes from Him. Moab’s pride, arrogance, idolatry, and contempt for God and His people led to this downfall.

The imagery of the horn and arm as symbols of strength appears throughout Scripture, and this verse summarizes Moab’s complete downfall: its kingdom, rulers, and armies are all brought to nothing. This judgment foreshadows the ultimate triumph of God’s kingdom over all earthly powers that oppose Him.

This verse reminds us that God is sovereign and has the power to bring down the mighty and proud. No matter how strong or influential a nation or person may seem, God’s judgment can bring them low. Moab’s judgment also serves as a warning that sin has consequences; their pride and rebellion led to their downfall. When we turn away from God and live in disobedience, we can expect negative consequences.

Finally, this verse highlights the importance of trusting in God rather than relying on our own strength or worldly power. Moab’s reliance on military might and national pride proved futile. As believers, we should seek God’s guidance and depend on His strength, not our own. Jeremiah 48:25 is a call to humility and obedience before the LORD.
