Jeremiah 51:12
Set vp the standart vpon the walles of Babylon, make the watch strong: set vp the watchman: prepare the ambushes: for the Lord hath both deuised and done that, which hee spake against the inhabitants of Babylon. Jeremiah 51:12 (KJV)
The book of Jeremiah is primarily a collection of prophecies and messages given by the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Judah and other nations. Jeremiah 51 contains a prophecy concerning the destruction of Babylon, a powerful empire of its day.
In the Bible, Babylon often represents the epitome of human rebellion against God, symbolizing pride, idolatry, and wickedness. God used Babylon as an instrument of judgment against Judah, yet He also pronounced judgment on Babylon itself for its sins.
In verse 12 God commands the setting up of a standard upon the walls of Babylon. The standard is a banner or flag that serves as a rallying point for an army, symbolizing the imminent judgment and downfall of Babylon. The watchmen are called to be vigilant, alert, and prepared for the coming destruction.
The verse declares that “the LORD hath both devised and done that which he spake against the inhabitants of Babylon,” and verse 13 adds that “the LORD hath devised, and it shall be, that he shall bring Babylon to an end.” These statements emphasize God’s sovereignty and the fulfillment of His prophetic word; Babylon’s destruction is not random but part of God’s planned judgment.
While the immediate context concerns Babylon’s specific judgment, broader spiritual lessons emerge. The passage reminds believers that God is in control of human history and nations, warns against pride, rebellion, and idolatry, and underscores the importance of being watchful and prepared for God’s righteous judgment.
