Then he put out the eyes of Zedekiah; and the king of Babylon bound him in chains, and carried him to Babylon, and put him in prison till the day of his death.

Jeremiah 52 records the final collapse of Jerusalem and the captivity of King Zedekiah by the Babylonians. At the time the city was under siege by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, and the nation of Judah faced imminent destruction of the temple and exile of its people.

Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, ruled in a period marked by political instability, unfaithfulness to God, and a persistent failure to heed the warnings of the prophets, especially Jeremiah. His rebellion against Babylonian authority provoked the severe judgment that followed.

Meaning

The verse details the harsh penalties imposed on Zedekiah: his eyes were put out, he was bound in chains, taken captive to Babylon, and kept in prison until his death.
