Lamentations 3:6

He hath set me in dark places, as they that be dead of old.

Lamentations 3:6 (KJV)

Lamentations is an Old Testament book traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, containing poetic laments over the destruction of Jerusalem and the Babylonian exile. In Lamentations 3:6, the speaker declares that God has set him in dark places, as those who are dead of old. This vivid metaphor conveys profound emotional and spiritual anguish.

Darkness in Scripture often symbolizes gloom, despair, and the absence of light. Here it represents the speaker’s overwhelming sense of sadness, hopelessness, and isolation. The phrase “as they that be dead of old” emphasizes the depth of distress, portraying a state of spiritual and emotional desolation comparable to being among the deceased. The speaker feels cut off from the joys of life, as if trapped in perpetual darkness and lifelessness.

The Hebrew verb in this verse underscores God’s active role: He has placed the speaker in darkness, a condition akin to the grave. This is not merely physical darkness but a state of abandonment, isolation, and hopelessness, as forgotten and cut off as the ancient dead. The immediate context of Lamentations 3:1-20 describes a man who has seen affliction by God’s rod, with walls built against him and his soul bowed down.

This verse reflects the speaker’s personal experience of suffering, both physical and emotional, highlighting the depths of despair over the destruction of Jerusalem and the loss of their homeland. Yet this chapter is also known for its turn of hope in verses 21-24, where the speaker recalls God’s mercies and faithfulness. This contrast highlights that lament is not the final word; even in the darkest place, the speaker remembers God’s character.

Believers may experience seasons of profound darkness and feel as though God has forgotten them, but such feelings can be brought honestly before God in lament. The Christian hope is that Christ Himself entered into the ultimate darkness of separation on the cross, so that believers may have hope even in their darkest moments.

Lamentations 3:6 calls for honest lament and trust in God’s faithfulness, even when circumstances seem hopeless. The verse teaches that even in the midst of deep anguish, we can turn to God for solace, hope, and restoration.
