Ezekiel 10:13

Listen to this article

“As for the wheels, it was cried unto them in my hearing, O wheel.”

Context and Background:The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that contains visions and messages from God given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. The passage in question is part of a vision Ezekiel receives, known as the vision of God’s glory departing from the temple.

Symbolism of the Wheels:In this vision, Ezekiel sees four living creatures with four wheels beside them. The wheels are described as having a unique appearance and structure, emphasising their importance. The wheels are believed to symbolise God’s divine presence and movement, representing His sovereignty and control over all creation. They are often referred to as “the wheels within wheels” in Ezekiel’s vision (Ezekiel 1:16).

Crying to the Wheels:In Ezekiel 10:13, Ezekiel hears a cry directed to the wheels. This can be interpreted in a couple of ways:

a. Interpreting the Wheels as Representatives of God’s Chariot:

In ancient times, a chariot was a powerful symbol of authority and mobility. Some scholars interpret the wheels in Ezekiel’s vision as representing the chariot of God, carrying His divine throne. In this context, the cry directed to the wheels may be seen as an expression of reverence, acknowledging God’s majesty and supremacy.

b. Acknowledgment of the Wheels’ Role in God’s Divine Plan:

The cry directed to the wheels may also symbolise an acknowledgment of the wheels’ role in executing God’s divine plan. The wheels, as part of the living creatures, are involved in moving and guiding God’s glory and purpose. The cry may highlight the order and coordination within God’s sovereignty and the recognition of the wheels’ significance in fulfilling His purposes.

Application and Spiritual Lessons:

  • Reverence for God’s Sovereignty:The cry to the wheels reminds us of the awe-inspiring nature of God’s authority and control. It encourages us to approach Him with reverence and humility, recognising His supremacy over all things.
  • Submission to God’s Divine Plan:The wheels in Ezekiel’s vision were intricately involved in carrying out God’s purpose. Likewise, we are called to submit to God’s divine plan for our lives, trusting in His guidance and direction.
  • Unity and Coordination:The coordination and order observed in the wheels within Ezekiel’s vision reflect the importance of unity among God’s people. As believers, we are called to work together in harmony, utilising our unique gifts and abilities to fulfil God’s purposes.
  • God’s Active Involvement:The fact that the wheels were being addressed and responded to indicates God’s active involvement in human affairs. It reminds us that God is not distant or detached but is intimately involved in the details of our lives.
  • Further Study:

To gain a more comprehensive understanding of Ezekiel’s vision and its significance, it is beneficial to read the entire vision starting from Ezekiel 1:4 and continuing through Ezekiel 10. Exploring commentaries, consulting study Bibles, and engaging in group discussions can also provide additional insights.

Remember, Bible interpretation can vary among individuals and denominations, so it’s essential to prayerfully study the Word and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit as you delve into its teachings.
