Ezekiel 10:22
And the likenesse of their faces was the same faces which I saw by the riuer of Chebar, their appearances and themselues: they went euery one straight forward. Ezekiel 10:22 (KJV)
The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament that records a series of visions and prophecies given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. The verse in question belongs to a larger vision in which Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord departing from the temple in Jerusalem because of the people’s idolatry and disobedience.
Earlier, in Ezekiel chapter 1, the prophet describes a vision by the river of Chebar where he saw heavenly beings with four distinct faces—a man, a lion, an ox, and an eagle. These beings are identified as cherubim and are associated with the presence and glory of God.
In chapter 10 the same cherubim reappear, confirming the continuity of the vision. The verse states, “And the likeness of their faces was the same, which I had seen by the river of Chebar, and their looks and themselves; they went every one straight forward.” Draft 3 adds, “And the likeness of the living creatures was as the likeness of the cherubim,” echoing the earlier description and emphasizing that the living creatures retain the same appearance as the cherubim.
The cherubim moved straight forward, a detail noted in Ezekiel 10:21, symbolizing their unwavering obedience to God’s commands and their single‑minded devotion to carrying out His will. Their forward motion reflects a steadfast commitment to divine purpose.
The four faces carry rich symbolic meaning. The face of a man represents intelligence and reason; the lion symbolizes strength and courage; the ox signifies endurance and service; and the eagle denotes swiftness and keen sight. Together these attributes illustrate the qualities needed for devoted service to God.
Application of the passage urges believers to emulate the cherubim’s steadfastness. Just as the cherubim went straight forward without turning aside, Christians are called to follow God’s guidance faithfully, using their unique gifts and qualities for His glory and remaining obedient to His will.
In summary, Ezekiel 10 portrays the consistency and steadfastness of the cherubim in fulfilling their divine roles. The verse reminds us of the importance of unwavering obedience and commitment to God’s will in our own lives, encouraging us to walk straight forward in faithful service.
