Listen to this article

“That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s essential to understand the broader context of the book of Ezekiel. Ezekiel was a prophet who was taken into Babylonian exile along with the Israelites. His prophecies primarily addressed the Israelites’ sins, God’s judgment, and the hope of restoration.

Verse:Ezekiel 18:15 (KJV) states, “That hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife.”

Understanding the verse:

  • “That hath not eaten upon the mountains”:This phrase refers to the practice of pagan worship on the high places or mountains, where idolatrous sacrifices were made. The verse emphasizes that the person described here has not participated in idolatrous practices.
  • “Neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel”:This phrase indicates that the individual has not worshipped or shown any inclination towards the false gods and idols that the Israelites had set up within their own land.
  • “Hath not defiled his neighbour’s wife”:This statement highlights the person’s moral integrity, specifically in relation to sexual purity and faithfulness within marriage.
  • Theological themes:
  • Monotheism and the rejection of idolatry:The verse emphasizes the importance of worshipping the one true God and avoiding the worship of false gods. It reflects God’s commandments to the Israelites to have no other gods before Him (Exodus 20:3).
  • Personal responsibility and righteousness:Ezekiel’s message consistently emphasizes personal responsibility for one’s actions and the need for individual righteousness. The verse portrays a person who has lived in obedience to God’s commandments, both in terms of worship and moral conduct.
  • Holiness and purity:The mention of not defiling a neighbour’s wife highlights the significance of upholding marital fidelity and sexual purity. It aligns with the biblical teaching on the sacredness of marriage and the call to live a holy life.
  • Application:

    • Rejecting idolatry:As believers today, we should examine our lives and ensure that we are not allowing anything or anyone to take the place of God in our hearts. We should be diligent in avoiding practices or beliefs that contradict our faith in the one true God.
    • Personal righteousness:This verse reminds us of the importance of personal accountability for our actions and decisions. We should strive to live in accordance with God’s commandments and pursue righteousness in all areas of our lives.
    • Sexual purity and faithfulness:This verse encourages us to uphold the sanctity of marriage and live in sexual purity. It reminds us to respect and honour the covenant of marriage and to abstain from any form of infidelity or sexual immorality.

Remember, a comprehensive study of any biblical verse should consider its immediate context, the overall message of the book, and how it aligns with the broader teachings of the Bible.
