Ezekiel 20:16
“Because they despised my judgments and walked not in my statutes, but polluted my sabbaths: for their heart went after their idols.”
Historical Context:The book of Ezekiel was written during the time of Israel’s exile in Babylon. The Israelites had been taken captive due to their persistent disobedience to God’s commands and their idolatrous practices.
Idolatry and Disobedience:In this verse, God accuses the Israelites of despising His judgments and failing to walk in His statutes. The people had abandoned God’s ways and turned to idol worship, violating the very commandments He had given them. This pattern of disobedience and idolatry had become deeply ingrained in the Israelites’ hearts.
Sabbath Desecration:Another specific charge against the Israelites in this verse is the desecration of the Sabbath. God had commanded the Israelites to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest and worship. However, they had defiled this sacred day by engaging in idolatrous practices instead of honoring God.
Consequences of Idolatry:Throughout the book of Ezekiel, God warns the Israelites about the consequences of their persistent idolatry. The idols they pursued only led to destruction and captivity, instead of providing the blessings and protection that God desired to give them.
The verse highlights the seriousness of the Israelites’ actions and the consequences they faced as a result of their disobedience and idolatry. It serves as a reminder to the readers, both then and now, of the importance of remaining faithful to God’s commandments and avoiding the temptation to turn to idols or false gods.
