Ezekiel 22:26

Listen to this article

“Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.”

Historical Context:In this verse, the prophet Ezekiel is delivering a message from God to the people of Israel during their exile in Babylon. God is addressing the sinful behaviour of the religious leaders, specifically the priests, who have failed to uphold His law and have dishonoured the sacred things and practices.

Violation of God’s Law:The verse begins by stating that the priests have violated God’s law. The priests were responsible for teaching and upholding the divine laws given to Israel. However, they had neglected their duties, leading the people astray and disregarding the importance of God’s commands.

Profaning the Holy Things:The priests are accused of profaning God’s holy things. They failed to maintain the sanctity of the rituals and objects associated with worship. By treating holy things with irreverence or allowing them to be contaminated, they displayed a lack of respect for God and His sacred ordinances.

Failure to Discern:The priests were also condemned for not distinguishing between the holy and the profane, and between the clean and the unclean. They neglected their role as spiritual leaders to guide the people in matters of moral and ceremonial purity. This failure resulted in a blurring of the boundaries between what was sacred and what was common or impure.

Neglect of the Sabbaths:The priests further disregarded God’s Sabbaths. The Sabbath was a day set apart for rest and worship, symbolising the covenant relationship between God and His people. By neglecting to observe the Sabbaths, the priests showed a lack of devotion to God and His prescribed times of worship.

Profaning the Name of God:As a consequence of the priests’ actions, God’s name was profaned among them. Their misconduct and disregard for His commands brought dishonour to God and His reputation. Instead of being a positive influence and reflecting His holiness, the priests’ behaviour tainted the perception of God among the people.

This verse serves as a stern rebuke to the religious leaders of Israel, highlighting their failure to uphold God’s law, honour His holy things, discern between what is holy and profane, and observe the Sabbath. It underscores the importance of faithfulness and integrity in religious leadership and emphasises the significance of distinguishing between what is sacred and what is common in our lives as believers.
