Ezekiel 23:43

Listen to this article

“Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?”

Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s essential to consider the context in which it was written. The book of Ezekiel contains prophecies and visions given to the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. In this particular chapter, Ezekiel is delivering a message from God regarding the unfaithfulness of Israel and Judah, symbolized by two sisters named Oholah (representing Samaria, the capital of Israel) and Oholibah (representing Jerusalem, the capital of Judah). The chapter uses strong language and metaphors to depict their spiritual adultery and idolatry.

Symbolic Language:In this verse, Ezekiel continues to address Oholibah (Jerusalem) and asks a rhetorical question about her willingness to engage in further idolatry and unfaithfulness. The language used is metaphorical, comparing Jerusalem’s unfaithfulness to the actions of an adulterous woman. This verse portrays the shocking extent to which Jerusalem had fallen into sin and spiritual idolatry.

Spiritual Adultery:The imagery of adultery is commonly used in the Bible to depict the unfaithfulness of God’s people when they turn away from Him and worship false gods or idols. In this verse, the question posed by Ezekiel suggests astonishment at the willingness of Jerusalem to continue engaging in idolatry, despite the consequences that it would bring upon her.

Consequences of Idolatry:Throughout the chapter, Ezekiel emphasizes the severe consequences that would result from Jerusalem’s spiritual adultery and idolatry. These consequences include judgment, destruction, and exile at the hands of foreign nations. Despite God’s warnings and previous judgments on the northern kingdom of Israel (Samaria), Jerusalem persisted in her sinful ways, leading to her downfall and captivity.

Spiritual Application:While this verse specifically addresses the historical context of Israel and Judah, there are spiritual lessons that can be applied today. It serves as a warning against the allure and danger of idolatry, which can take various forms in our lives. Idolatry involves placing anything or anyone above God and worshiping false gods, which can include material possessions, personal ambitions, or even our own desires. This verse reminds us to remain faithful to God and to guard our hearts against the temptation to engage in spiritual adultery.

  • In summary:Ezekiel 23:43 (KJV) conveys the astonishment of the prophet at Jerusalem’s willingness to continue in idolatry and spiritual adultery despite the consequences it would bring. The verse serves as a reminder to remain faithful to God and to guard against the allure of idolatry in our own lives.
