Ezekiel 25:17

Listen to this article

“And I will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes, and they shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall lay my vengeance upon them.”

It’s important to understand the context of this verse within the book of Ezekiel to grasp its meaning fully. Ezekiel was a prophet who lived during the time of the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were taken captive and Jerusalem was destroyed. God called Ezekiel to deliver messages of judgment against various nations, including those who had mistreated and oppressed His people.

In Ezekiel 25, the prophet delivers a series of judgments against neighbouring nations, including Ammon, Moab, Edom, and Philistia. These nations had rejoiced over Israel’s downfall and had taken advantage of the situation. However, in verse 17, God declares that He will execute great vengeance upon them with furious rebukes.

This verse emphasises God’s sovereignty, His role as the ultimate judge, and His commitment to vindicate His people. It highlights that those who oppose God’s chosen people and mistreat them will face His righteous judgment. The purpose of this judgment is not merely punishment but also for them to recognise and acknowledge that He is the Lord, the one true God.

The verse doesn’t specify the exact form or timing of the vengeance, but it assures that God will act in a way that demonstrates His power and justice. It serves as a reminder that God is actively involved in the affairs of humanity, and He will not allow injustice and mistreatment to go unpunished.

In summary, Ezekiel 25:17 in the King James Version of the Bible portrays God’s commitment to execute vengeance upon nations that mistreat and oppress His people. It underscores His sovereignty and desire to reveal Himself as the Lord through His righteous judgments.
