Ezekiel 29:4

Listen to this article

“But I will put hooks in thy jaws, and I will cause the fish of thy rivers to stick unto thy scales, and I will bring thee up out of the midst of thy rivers, and all the fish of thy rivers shall stick unto thy scales.”

Context:Ezekiel was a prophet who was taken into exile along with the Israelites in Babylon. In this chapter, God sends Ezekiel to prophesy against Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and pronounce judgment upon him and the nation.

Symbolic Language:In this verse, God uses vivid and symbolic language to convey His message to Pharaoh. The use of fishing imagery is significant. The “hooks in thy jaws” symbolize God’s control and power over Pharaoh. It implies that God will take hold of Pharaoh’s pride and arrogance, forcing him to submit to His will.

Pride and Arrogance:The imagery of the fish sticking to Pharaoh’s scales represents the consequences of Pharaoh’s pride and arrogance. It suggests that Pharaoh will be weighed down and burdened by the consequences of his actions. His pride, like the scales of a fish, will be a source of entanglement and hindrance.

God’s Judgment:This verse is part of a larger message of judgment against Pharaoh and Egypt. God intended to bring judgment upon Egypt for its arrogance and oppression of His people. The image of fish sticking to Pharaoh’s scales indicates that God will bring about a situation where Pharaoh will be overwhelmed and unable to escape the consequences of his actions.

God’s Sovereignty:Through this verse, we see God’s sovereignty and control over the affairs of nations and individuals. God uses imagery that would have been familiar to the ancient Egyptians, emphasizing His authority over their gods and idols.

Application:While this verse specifically addresses Pharaoh and Egypt, there are broader lessons we can learn. It serves as a reminder that pride and arrogance will eventually lead to downfall and judgment. We should be cautious about becoming self-reliant and thinking highly of ourselves. Instead, we should acknowledge God’s sovereignty and submit ourselves to His will.

  • Overall, Ezekiel 29:4 illustrates the consequences of pride and God’s authority over the nations. It serves as a reminder of the need for humility and submission to God’s will.
