Ezekiel 30:7
And they shall be desolate in the midst of the countries that are desolate, and her cities shall be in the midst of the cities that are wasted.
Ezekiel 30:7 (KJV)
Context
Ezekiel, a priest and prophet among the exiles in Babylon, delivered God’s messages of judgment and hope to Israel and surrounding nations. In Ezekiel 30, he speaks of judgment on Egypt and its allies, describing their downfall and devastation. Verse 7 specifically addresses Egypt, declaring that it will become desolate in the midst of other desolate countries, and its cities will lie among ruined cities.
Meaning
This verse portrays widespread destruction. Egypt, once powerful and prosperous, would be humbled by God’s judgment. The phrase “in the midst of” places Egypt among lands that have already suffered devastation, such as Judea, ravaged by the same enemy, Babylon. Egypt would lose its prominence and wealth, undergoing the same fate as Jerusalem and other cities. The specific mention of Egypt’s cities being among wasted cities highlights the totality of the judgment—no part of the nation would be spared. This desolation is a direct consequence of Egypt’s rebellion, sin, arrogance, idolatry, and reliance on other nations instead of God.
Biblical connections
The judgment is not merely punitive but also revelatory, as the surrounding chapters show that such devastation leads to the recognition that “I am the Lord.” This theme of knowing God through judgment is a key biblical principle. It serves as a warning that no nation or power on earth can stand against God when He decides to execute His judgment.
Application
This verse reminds us of the consequences of disobedience and the importance of aligning ourselves with God’s will. It calls for repentance, humility, and obedience, and warns against pride and self-reliance, showing that no nation or individual is immune to divine judgment. The principle that sin leads to desolation is echoed throughout Scripture.
Reflection
This oracle underscores God’s control over history and nations, and His commitment to holiness and righteousness. Egypt’s downfall stands as a lasting testimony that human power and prosperity are fleeting when set against the purposes of the Lord.
