Ezekiel 44:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:57

“In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers, uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations.”

This verse is a part of a vision given to the prophet Ezekiel by God. In this vision, Ezekiel is shown the future restoration of the temple and the reestablishment of proper worship and service to God. Ezekiel 44 specifically focuses on the role of the Levites and the requirements for those who minister in the sanctuary.

In verse 7, God expresses His displeasure with the Israelites for allowing strangers into His sanctuary. These strangers are described as “uncircumcised in heart, and uncircumcised in flesh.” Circumcision in the Bible is a physical sign of the covenant between God and His chosen people, Israel. However, here, it is used metaphorically to indicate the spiritual state of these individuals.

The phrase “uncircumcised in heart” refers to those who are spiritually impure or unfaithful. They lack true devotion and commitment to God. Likewise, “uncircumcised in flesh” means they have not undergone the physical act of circumcision, which was a sign of belonging to the covenant community.

By allowing these unfaithful and uncircumcised individuals into the sanctuary, the Israelites are polluting God’s house and breaking His covenant. The mention of offering “bread, the fat, and the blood” likely refers to the sacrifices that were meant to be offered in the sanctuary. These sacrifices were supposed to be carried out by the priests and Levites according to God’s instructions. Allowing unqualified individuals to perform these sacred duties and participate in the offerings is considered an abomination.

This verse emphasizes the importance of maintaining purity and faithfulness in worship and service to God. It warns against allowing unfaithful and spiritually impure individuals to have access to the holy things of God. God desires sincere worship from His people, and any contamination of His sanctuary or violation of His covenant is strongly condemned.

Overall, Ezekiel 44:7 serves as a reminder to remain faithful and dedicated in our relationship with God and to uphold the sanctity of His sanctuary, ensuring that only those who are spiritually qualified and committed participate in the holy duties.
