Ezekiel 44:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:29

And when they goe forth into the vtter court, euen into the vtter court to the people, they shall put off their garments wherein they ministred, and lay them in the holy chambers, and they shall put on other garments, and they shall not sanctifie the people with their garments. Ezekiel 44:19 (KJV)

Context: The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and it contains visions and messages from God given to the prophet Ezekiel. The passage in question is part of a larger section (Ezekiel 44:1-46:24) that describes the restoration and purification of the temple and the priesthood. In Ezekiel’s vision, he sees a future temple and its regulations. This particular verse focuses on the instructions given to the priests regarding their conduct and attire when ministering to the people in the outer court of the temple. Significance of the garments: The priests were required to wear specific garments when ministering before the Lord in the inner court or holy chambers. These garments were designed to set them apart and symbolize their consecration to God’s service. The attire of the priests was important because it reflected their holiness and separation from worldly matters. Changing garments before entering the outer court: When the priests finished their duties in the inner court, they were instructed to change their garments before entering the outer court to interact with the people. By changing their clothes, they were demonstrating a shift in their role and the need to maintain a distinction between the sacred and the profane. Avoiding the sanctification of the people with their garments: The priests were not allowed to sanctify the people with the garments they wore in the inner court. The reason for this prohibition was likely to emphasize that it was God alone who sanctified the people, not the priests or their clothing. The focus was on the people’s direct relationship with God and their own personal consecration. Overall, Ezekiel 44:19 highlights the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between the sacred and the profane, and it emphasizes the role of the priests in leading the people in their worship and understanding of God. It also reminds the priests that their role is not to sanctify the people through external means but to point them to the holiness and sanctification that comes from God alone.
