Ezekiel 44:22

Listen to this article

“Ezekiel 44:22 (KJV): Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away: but they shall take maidens of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that had a priest before.”

Historical Context:The book of Ezekiel was written by the prophet Ezekiel during the Babylonian exile. The Israelites had been taken captive by the Babylonians, and Ezekiel prophesied about their future restoration and the reestablishment of the priesthood.

The Role of the Priests:In the Old Testament, the priests played a crucial role in serving God and representing the people before Him. They were responsible for offering sacrifices, conducting rituals, and teaching the Law to the people. The Levitical priests were given specific instructions and regulations to maintain holiness in their service.

Marital Regulations for Priests:Ezekiel 44:22 outlines specific marital regulations for the priests. They were not permitted to marry widows or women who had been divorced. Instead, they were to marry maidens (young unmarried women) from the house of Israel or widows who had been previously married to a priest.

Purity and Holiness:The prohibition against marrying widows or divorced women was likely intended to maintain purity and holiness within the priesthood. God desired the priestly lineage to be preserved and untainted, ensuring that the priests’ focus remained solely on their divine service.

Symbolism and Spiritual Lessons:While this commandment was specifically addressed to the priests of Israel, there are broader spiritual lessons that can be drawn from it. In the New Testament, all believers are considered part of a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9), and the principles of purity and holiness apply to the entire community of believers.

  • The Importance of Spiritual Discernment:This verse also emphasizes the need for spiritual discernment when it comes to choosing a life partner. The priests were instructed to select women from specific backgrounds who would support them in their spiritual responsibilities. This highlights the significance of choosing a spouse who shares one’s faith and values, as they can play a crucial role in supporting and encouraging spiritual growth.
  • God’s Concern for Order and Holiness:Throughout the Bible, we see God’s concern for order, holiness, and the maintenance of boundaries. The instructions regarding the priests’ marriages were part of God’s plan to establish and maintain the holiness of the priesthood, ensuring that it remained set apart for His service.

In conclusion, Ezekiel 44:22 provides specific instructions for the priests of Israel regarding their choice of marriage partners. While these regulations were given to the priests during the Old Testament era, they highlight the importance of purity, holiness, and spiritual discernment in our lives today.
