Ezekiel 47:7

Listen to this article

Now when I had returned, behold, at the banke of the riuer were very many trees on the one side and on the other. Ezekiel 47:7 (KJV)

The book of Ezekiel is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, and chapter 47 presents a striking vision of a future temple and the restoration of the land of Israel. In this vision Ezekiel sees a river flowing out from the temple, bringing life and fruitfulness to the surrounding land.

The river in the vision represents the life‑giving presence of God and His blessings. It symbolizes spiritual abundance, refreshment, and the work of the Holy Spirit. The image has significant parallels to the river of life described in Revelation 22:1‑2, underscoring the divine source of continual renewal.

Along the banks of this river Ezekiel observes “very many trees on the one side and on the other.” The abundance of trees signifies fruitfulness, prosperity, and growth. Throughout Scripture trees are used as symbols of stability, longevity, and the blessedness of those who trust in the Lord, as seen in Psalm 1:3 and Jeremiah 17:7‑8.

The fact that the trees line both sides of the river highlights the all‑encompassing nature of God’s blessings. The provision is not limited to one side or a select group; it extends to all people, indicating a time of comprehensive restoration and prosperity when God’s blessings overflow.

Spiritually, the passage points beyond its literal description. The river represents the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, bringing life, transformation, and spiritual abundance to believers. The trees symbolize believers who are rooted in God and bear the fruits of righteousness. This imagery reminds us that God desires to bless His people abundantly and calls us to remain connected to Him in order to experience His fullness.

In summary, Ezekiel 47:7 portrays a vision of a river flowing from the temple, flanked by many trees on both banks. This powerful image conveys God’s life‑giving presence and abundant blessings, encouraging believers to stay rooted in Him, pursue spiritual growth, and anticipate the overflow of divine provision in their lives.
