Daniel 5:1
Belshazzar the King made a great feast to a thousand of his Lords, and dranke wine before the thousand. Daniel 5:1 (KJV)
Historical Context: The book of Daniel is set during the Babylonian captivity of the Israelites, when Daniel and his friends were taken as captives. King Nebuchadnezzar ruled during their early years in Babylon, but by the time of Daniel 5 he had died and Belshazzar had taken the throne. Belshazzar, son of Nabonidus, served as co‑regent and was known for an extravagant and idolatrous lifestyle.
The Feast: Belshazzar organized a great feast for his lords and officials, inviting a thousand of them. The gathering was lavish and opulent, likely held in the palace or a grand hall, and was intended to display wealth, power, and indulgence.
Drank Wine: The text specifically notes that Belshazzar drank wine before the thousand. Wine was a common celebratory beverage in ancient times, but the mention underscores his excessive lifestyle, lack of self‑control, and disregard for God’s laws.
Pride and Excess: The extravagant feast reflects Belshazzar’s pride and arrogance. His indulgence in material pleasures demonstrates a lack of humility and a contempt for God, serving as a cautionary example for believers against the dangers of pride, excess, and self‑centredness.
Idolatry: The feast was accompanied by the use of vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem (see Daniel 5:2‑4). By employing these holy vessels for an unholy purpose, Belshazzar showed disrespect toward God and provoked divine judgment. This reminds believers to guard against idolatry and to honour God’s sacred things.
Humility and Moderation: Believers are called to cultivate humility and avoid excessive indulgence in worldly pleasures. Recognising that all we possess is a gift from God, we should use it wisely and in moderation, acknowledging His sovereignty over our lives.
Worship and Reverence: Our worship must be directed solely toward God, and we should maintain reverence for His sacred things, avoiding any form of idolatry. Honouring and respecting what is consecrated to Him reflects true devotion.
Accountability: God is a just and righteous judge who holds each person accountable for their choices and actions. Believers should strive to live in obedience to God’s commands, seeking His guidance and relying on His grace.
